One of the most picturesque, yet simple and heartwarming weddings we have this year is that of our beloved couple, Derek and Leanne.
We had the absolute joy of capturing their prewedding session many months prior to this big day. During their session in New Zealand, our photographer, Louis, captured some gorgeous shots of them frolicking in meadows and having the time of their lives by the mountains. (See the gallery here!)
So we were emotional, too, witnessing their big day finally arriving. Located in an undescribably beautiful venue, Stones of the Yarra Valley, the day took place in a rustic, warm, sentimental setting. There was something about the little chapel with the big concrete walls, or the vast gorgeous views of the valleys and hillsides from afar, or the gorgeous naturally lit reception hall at the other end of the area. All of this, bright and beautiful, combined with the joy and love from family and friends, was enough to start what would be their most precious day.
One of our most favourite moments of the morning was when Derek and Leanne made plans to read each other their handwritten letters, which they wrote to each other, without looking face-to-face. They stood back to back, by the lovely chapel, and recited their words, trying their best not to get too emotional. It was a genuine moment shared between the two, still adamant on sharing their first look inside, once Leanne takes her steps towards the altar.
In the service, many joyful tears were shed. Not many words can describe the emotions that overtook the room. Leanne’s late father had just passed away a few months before the wedding, so when it was time for her mother and relatives to see her walk down the aisle, many cried as the moment came.
The sermon was delivered beautifully by the pastor, in such a way that it brought even more tears to the bridal party and guests.
After they walked out of the chapel, donned by rose petals in true, unforgettable nostalgic wedding fashion, we proceeded to the fun photoshoot and later, the reception itself. With long tables already decorated with leaves, candles, and simple tableware, we couldn’t help but gush at the sight.
As Derek and Leanne walked into the room, everyone marvelled, clapped, and cheered at their entrance. There was a cutting of the cake (an adored three-tiered non-icing cake with flowers on its sides), and delivery of a few good words. One of those was Derek’s father, who told the story of how Derek hadn’t told him about Leanne, earlier on in their relationship. Funnily enough, Derek’s dad never even knew his son was in a relationship. It wasn’t until a year later, when Derek and his father coincidentally got invited to the same wedding, and both attended it with their significant others, that his father knew about and properly met Leanne.
No reception can go on, of course, without a few games to lighten up the mood. By way of a couple chairs, shoes, and a blindfold, the MC conducted the event smoothly, inviting guests and Derek and Leanne themselves to continuously laugh giddily and enjoy the rest of the night.
We are touched not just by how cherished and beautiful their wedding day was, but also by Derek and Leanne’s trust, kindness, and generosity they exuded to everyone around them – their friends, family, and even our team who have grown to know them lovingly. We hope they become even more of a light, and a rock to each other, in even the toughest times.
We celebrate their love and wish them all the happiness in the years ahead.
