“Love is meant to be an adventure.”
– Gordon B. Hinckley
When the sun is shining, the wind is breezing through, there is no better way to spend the day than with your special one. Here in Melbourne, we’re well familiar with what a rare occasion perfectly good weather can be. Now, we hear you – some days it rains. Some days it’s cold. But if you and your partner are the outdoorsy type, no doubt you’d be ready to leap out the door once the sun comes out again.
And here, we’ve got you covered. There are many ways you can plan a fun, special date that doesn’t include a dinner or a movie. Why not venture into the outdoors? Be one with nature, do something you never tried before, or see things you’ve only ever heard of. Here’s a list of six date ideas that can give you that memorable moment you and your partner both need:
- A Romantic Boat Ride
Remember that scene from The Little Mermaid? Where Prince Eric lovingly rows the boat as he gazes at the love of his life? Well, it’s not too impossible to make this dream a reality. Take your partner out for a romantic boat ride at the Studley Park Boathouse. Their impressive range of rowboats, canoes, and kayaks are always available for hire for a leisurely row. To end the day, the boathouse also provides you a nice café and restaurant to unwind in. You’re in for a gorgeous afternoon.
- A Chill Picnic
Whether you’ve been together for two weeks, or five whole years, nobody can say no to a fun, laidback picnic. When the weather hits that perfect level, it’s always fun to take your partner out for a daytime date. Mind you – compared to those fine dining restaurants in five-star hotels, picnics are so much more inexpensive and enjoyable, aren’t they? You’re free to lay in the grass, or on top of a cute picnic blanket you can easily find in Daiso, or a store near you, and there are always plenty of places to do it in. Here in Melbourne, we’re a big fan of the Carlton Gardens – right by the fountain, in front of the Royal Exhibition Building, if you want a fancy touch. Other than that, Royal Botanical Gardens is a massive park at the heart of the Yarra, and it has acres and acres of perfect picnic spots all around. Not to mention a leisurely stroll could be in place as well. As for the food, you can always pack something specially homemade, or run to a nearby market to grab bites and supplies!
- A Movie in a Drive-In Cinema
If you both happen to be avid film lovers – and if another evening at Hoyts sounds a little too mainstream – we recommend trying one of Melbourne’s fine drive-in cinemas. A drive-in gives the ultimate romantic old-school experience for your date. You could even try hiring a topless convertible car if you want the full-on retro experience. What better way to spend a night than watching a movie in the open air, underneath a starry sky? We’ve heard good things about Coburg’s Drive-In Cinema, but you may also look up Lunar on Dandenong if it’s closer to your area.
- A Lesson in Ice Skating
Now that it’s winter, it seems a perfect occasion to try ice skating. If you’re one of those couples who are never afraid of a challenge or to try something new, why not take a lesson in ice skating in one of Melbourne’s best ice rinks in town? For many of us city-goers, the O’Brien Group Arena in Docklands is the place to go. If you can’t be bothered to take a lesson and want to simply learn as you go, that works too! Holding hands while gliding along the ice, twirling (or attempting to, lest you fall down), ice skating is guaranteed to give you a fun, laughable, and memorable time together.
- A Walk in the Flower Gardens
Gardens never lose their charm. So many places in Melbourne offer you a refreshing time with your loved one as you sit under the shade of trees, stroll through parks with fountains, bushes and flowers, and rest assured, it’s a fantastic idea to get a photo or two. You could spend hours walking through the pathways of Royal Botanical Gardens – with things such as lakes, greenhouses, and cafés that will guide your way. Or you could try the more subtle parks like Fitzroy or Carlton Gardens. When the day gets a little warmer, and the sun peeks out a little brighter, or even if the day is overcast, and the temperature feels just right for a leisurely stroll, try this simple date idea out. Maybe you’ll unearth some deep and much-needed conversations, or maybe, you’ll simply grant yourself the quality time you both have been missing.
- A Day at the Beach
Sand between your toes, a light airy breeze, salt in your hair, the ocean at your fingertips – nothing says “getaway” like a romantic day at the beach. For beaches, ports, and cliffs, the Melbourne area is teeming with them. Leave your phone behind and enjoy the warmth of the sunlight, the cool, gentle wind, or just the fun of having the beach to yourself. Now, there are places like St. Kilda beach, which gets populated but is still a fine place to play or picnic in. Brighton Beach is also a very photo-worthy spot, with its iconic colourful bathing sheds, and so much space to roam along the shoreline. Other places have iconic, beautiful beaches, like Anglesea, Williamstown, or Sorrento. Some beaches, though, are pure hidden gems – Pearse’s Beach, Red Rocks Beach, or Sealers Cove, to name a few. You could also witness a stunning sunset at Half Moon Bay, after going for a swim at the beach in Black Rock. Don’t wait until the honeymoon – there are so many options you can go to today.
- A Visit to Petting Zoos
Last but not least, if you’re a couple with a soft spot for any furry friend, petting zoos or farms can also be a wonderful experience. From baby lambs, deer, alpacas, or even sheep, nothing gives a nice little memory to hold onto like spending the day in a zoo or a petting farm. It’s also bound to fill you some nice picture frames for the shelves. While Melbourne and Werribee Zoos are worth a lookout if you haven’t been already, we also recommend the Collingwood Children’s Farm where you can watch them up close and feed them while you’re at it!
We hope these have served up a fresh pile of inspiration for planning out your next date together. Giving each other time and undivided attention is so vital in making each other happy in your journey together.
